I have fond memories of story time when my mother used to read to my sister and I right before going to bed. I still remember her reading such books as Charlotte’s Web and The Secret Garden. Although it doesn’t seem that long ago when my mother was reading to me, now I’m reading to my own child. My son is still too young to understand anything we are reading but I’m still grateful for that time of day when things are winding down and my husband and I get to spend time reading with him. I know that it won't be too long before he starts understanding what we are reading and starts to remember the stories we read. Books are a great way to teach children new things and have them start thinking about the world around them. I'm always on the lookout for good children's books to expand my son's library. For those of you wanting to go more "green" in your life and have your kids be a part of it too, story time would be a great place to start. Here are some books for kids up to elementary school age that will inspire them and give them sweet "green" memories of story time.
This is just a short list, as there are many great books out there for children about living greener. Do you have a favorite green children's book that hasn't been mentioned yet?
A recent favorite in our house is Michael Recycle by Ellie Bethel and Alexandra Colombo. My daughter loves the rhymes and the tips at the end of the book for making our world a better place. I love that although he is billed as a “green” superhero, he doesn’t come in and save the day. He is merely a catalyst for change - encouraging the townsfolk to do the clean-up and green-up themselves!
I would recommend Planet in Peril part of the Horrible Geography series. This was written by Anita Ganeri and published by Scholastic.
